Photos from 1910 – 1945

It is important to understand the history of Korea related to the Moo Duk Kwan®.  Japanese occupation began in 1910 and ended in August 15, 1945 with the end of WWII.  During this 36 years of the occupation, Koreans were prohibited to connect with their culture and history.

Hwang Kee, founder of the Moo Duk Kwan®, was born in November 9, 1914 which is 4 years after the Japanese annexation of Korea.  Founder Hwang Kee had to enter the Japanese education for his entire school years.  He did not have opportunity to learn about the culture and history of Korea other than from family.  His background became a big challenge for him and his Moo Duk Kwan® organization's development in early days.  Because the base of value for the Moo Duk Kwan® were History, Tradition, Philosophy, Discipline/Respect, and technique.

We are able to see his struggle through the Moo Duk Kwan development, such as name changes of the art and technical developments.  We as a student of Moo Duk Kwan to understand our history for future strengthen of the Art.
